Cyber Case to strike under lights at Turffontein
Chad Cooke

It is under lights at Turffontein tonight (Tuesday, Feb 16) where the eigth-race card is headed by the Grade 3 Tommy Hostspur Handicap over 1000m for a stake of R200 000.
Named in honour of one of the fastest horses to have graced the South African turf, this contest sees some talented speedsters lock horns and it appears to be a meeting of the proven against pretenders to the crown.
Charles Laird’s Cyber Case has been in good form recently and his ability over this trip is unquestioned with five wins and placings in nine outing over the minimum distance.
This son of Casey Tibbs has racked up eight wins in his career to date and the tally does not look set to get stuck there.
The five-year-old gelding was disappointing last time out when he missed the break and never got close, but that effort is best ignored as it is not his form.
Laird’s runner had reeled off four wins in six outings prior to that and he need only repeat that form here to take the honours.
The main danger to the Laird inmate could be the Gary Alexander-trained South Country. Alexander will be all out to win this race as he was the man who trained Tommy Hotspur initially and took the sprint champion to many of his graded wins.
South Country might not be the speedster that Tommy Hotspur was, but he is quick and his form over the course and distance is very good.
The son of National Assembly needed his last outing badly and the three-length defeat he suffered at the hooves of Cyber Case should not be repeated here. South Country is 1kg better off at the weights and he will strip a far fitter horse now. The stable is also enjoying a purple patch at the moment, so this is a horse to be respected.
Of the other runners, Noble Heir, Cool Spender and Tirade deserve mention.
Noble Heir is a talented filly and she is quick. She will be into the lead qiuckly but there are a number of speed horses here and should could find the going tough if she elects to lock horns from the off.
Cool Spender was beaten 1,50 lengths by Cyber Case in the Lebelo and is 1kg better off at the weights now so he has to be respected while KwaZulu-Natal raider Tirade brings his winning streak to the Highveld.
Michael Roberts’s five-year-old has been very lightly raced and his current form is excellent but he comes off a three-month break and is up in class. He has a light weight to shoulder which is in his favour but he has it all to do.
