Take direct route with National Lane
The second of the two midweek race meetings on the Highveld takes place at the Vaal on Thursday where the inside turf track is the surface of choice for the nine scheduled races.
The card is not highlighted by a ‘main’ event as such, but is rather littered with minor handicaps that are competitive and full of potential pitfalls.
Getting the correct combinations in the Pick 6 on Thursday should be rewarded handsomely, but it is no easy task and there is a chance that the pool, or at least a portion of it, could be carried forward to the weekend.
The exotic bet gets under way in the fourth, a 1 400m fillies and mares Maiden Plate. This is possibly the easiest of the Pick 6 races assess and two runners should suffice here - Mark Dixon’s Royal Highness and Lucky Houdalakis’ National Lane, the latter could possibly be the banker in the exotic bet.
The second leg is a 62 MR Handicap over 1 400m for the ladies again and this is a touch more competitive than the maiden plate.
Bikini Miss, Bells-A-Calling and Greet The Day look set to fight this one out and the winner should come from that trio.
The sixth race of the day could go to Victory Belt who brings good form into this contest and need only hold it to have a winning chance, but Alwaysawinner and Mr Magic have both got good enough form to take the honours.
Fourteen runners contest the seventh race, a 66 MR Handicap over 1 600m, in which at least four runners have to be included in the exotic bet.
Advance Call has the form to win the race but the likes of Moniz, Mr Ronaldo and Burn Up have to be considered. It could also be a good idea to include any horses that find betting support.
The eighth race, a 62 MR Handicap over 1 000m for the ladies, is much the same as the previous race where four runners are the minimum requirement.
Beautiful Diva could follow up on an impressive maiden win last time out but Focus On Fashion, Lady Ameera and Dr Vienna are all big runners at best.
In the final leg, Saint Stephen has the form to win this contest and he could come home lonely but should one have a live ticket coming into this, the last leg of the Pick 6, it might well be worth having Breeze On By and Autumn Wizard in the permutation.
