All eyes on Buy and Sell
Chad Cooke
Lightning and rain has played havoc in Johannesburg over the last few weeks and the meeting at Turffontein on Saturday came to an abrupt end when nature had the final say.
The two three-year-old features had to be postponed and will be run tomorrow night before the off of the first race, making the eight race card a 10-race programme.
These two contests promise much and one would do well to pay a visit to the course to see the youngsters in action.
It is unlikely that these races will form any part of the night’s exotic bets, which are very competitive and could see substantial payouts, assuming that mother nature does not have another tantrum.
The main events of the evening are the fourth race and the sixth race, the fourth being a Pinnacle Plate over 1400m and the sixth a 97 merit-rated handicap over 1000m for the fillies and mares.
Buy And Sell, a stalwart of the South African turf, tops the weights and ratings in the fourth race and is the best weighted horse in the contest. His rating of 108 is four points plus better than any other horse in the race and his recent form suggest that he is coming back to best.
In his last run he stayed on well for fourth behind Oracy over 1800m at the track. That effort might suggest that this trip could be a touch on the sharp side but he has excellent form over the trip, having won once and placed once in two runs over the trip.
Braggadacio and Imperial Gesture both have ability and have to be respected but an in-form Buy And Sell should simply pack too much of a punch for this pair.
The fillies and mares sprint is a far tougher race to decipher with at least five of the entrants having lively winning chances.
Topping this list is the top weight in the race, Picadilly Miss who will be partnered by Piere Strydom tomorrow night. This daughter of London News has some good form in very decent company and has excellent form over the distance. The mass she has to carry is an obvious concern, giving her rivals a chance here.
Stablemate Worldwise is far better than her poor last effort where she never even got into the hunt. She is far better than that effort suggests and the pairing make lots of appeal for the Pick 6 and Jackpot.
Epworth Belle has reeled off three wins in her last four outings but she comes off a short layoff and could just need the run. She too is distance suited and cannot be ignored.
Copper Jet and Vareuse has both got good recent form but are up in class and although they have more to do here their form suggests that they cannot be ignored
