Only two take on Presvis
THE classy Presvis (Luca Cumani /Kieren Fallon) is set to face only two rivals in a 2 000m Tapeta handicap at Meydan tomorrow night after connections elected to run him in that contest instead of the 1 800m Group 3 Al Rashidiya on turf tonight.
His chosen reappearance is over the same course and distance as the $10million Dubai World Cup, as opposed to the Dubai Duty Free in which he was second last year.
Saeed Bin Suroor and Mike de Kock, the most successful trainers in Carnival history, are represented by Allybar (Ahmed Ajtebi) and Zulu Chief (Paul Devlin) respectively, but the Brian Meehan-trained City Leader is a non-runner.
City Leader’s stablemate Crowded House (Jamie Spencer) is the only British challenger in the Al Rashidiya tonight in which Godolphin’s Alexandros, a place behind Presvis in the 2009 Dubai Duty Free will be strongly fancied. 2008 Irish Derby winner Frozen Fire will make his debut for De Kock with Christophe Soumillon in the saddle.
Sportinlife.com report that Crowded House is likely to improve for tonight’s long-awaited comeback. A scintillating success in the 2008 Racing Post Trophy meant the Rainbow Quest colt was prominent in ante-post lists for both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby, but he disappointed on his comeback at York.
On his only other start of the year Crowded House finished a creditable sixth behind wonder horse Sea The Stars at Epsom, and trainer Meehan is looking forward to seeing his charge back on the track in tonight’s Group Three event.
“He’s in good form and seems to be enjoying himself out here,” said Meehan.
“It’s been a long time since Epsom but we just decided to leave him alone a bit after that and I think he might just need (this) run. We’re looking forward to getting started with him again and I’m sure he retains all of his ability.”
Godolphin are represented by last season’s Lockinge Stakes runner-up Alexandros, who makes his first appearance since finishing down field in the Hong Kong Mile in December.
“Alexandros was a bit unlucky not to win the Lockinge Stakes last year but I was a little disappointed with his latest run at Hong Kong,” trainer Saeed bin Suroor told www.godolphin.com.
“He is ready to race and has been working well recently. He will have no problem with the nine-furlong distance and I am hoping to see a nice performance.”
Meanwhile, Kieren Fallon was looking forward to riding the Cumani-trained Seta and told Telegraph.co.uk, “Luca has some very nice horses and it is good to be riding so many of them. Presvis is very good, but the one that I am most looking forward to is the filly Seta. I believe she has a very bright future, even though she was beaten into third in the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster (in September),” he pointed out.
Hibaayeb, the Clive Brittain filly who finished second in the May Hill, went on to take the Fillies’ Mile at Ascot. Fallon’s optimism regarding Seta is worth noting.
