Tirade looks set to kick up a storm
David Thiselton
Racing takes place at Scottsville on Wednesday where the African Holly Handicap, a non-black type merit rated handicap over 1 000m, is the main race on the card and sees a strong field of in form sprinters assemble.
Michael Roberts sends out Tirade who as a lightly-raced five-year-old is now fulfilling his early ability.
He has won his last three sprints, all over 1 000m, but is classy and should still be ahead of the handicapper off a rating of 85 despite having been raised six points for his last win.
Rain has been forecast for today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) so the going could come up soft. Tirade has won in slightly soft conditions before so cut in the ground shouldn't bother him.
The Dennis Bosch-trained Noble Heir is one of the quickest fillies in the country so is always dangerous over the minimum trip.
She led from start to finish last time at Clairwood and found extra when challenged late. The concern is that in her penultimate start over this course and distance in slightly soft going she ran below par.
However, she has won three times over this course and distance, including once in soft going, so perhaps she just had an off day.
The Bart Rice-trained Chigger Yellem beat Noble Heir by nearly four lengths in that aforementioned race and is now 1kg better off despite having won again since over 1 000m at Clairwood. He is an ultra tough handicapper, who appears to have the ability to carry big weights, so is definitely in with a shout here off just a two point higher mark for his last win.
The Herman Brown-trained Jinzo ran well when second in a conditions event over 1100m in slightly soft going at this course last time out. If he repeats that run he could earn again. His stablemate, Tiwi Bomber, ran second in both of his last visits to this course and they were behind Tirade and Chigger Yellem respectively. He is 2,5kg better off with Tirade for a 1,5 length beating which gives him a chance on paper.
However, Tirade probably had something in hand on that occasion.
The Sean Tarry-trained Mr Top is in fine form, but must handle a three-point merit rated raise and also probably prefers 1 200m. Combat Leader must face Tirade on the same weight terms, if apprentice allowances are included, as when beaten by 3,5 lengths so looks to have a lot to do although Glen Kotzen’s Summerveld yard can never be discounted. The Tracy Woolard-trained King James has been showing signs of coming back to his best but he is 2kg under sufferance here. In other races, the Herman Brown-trained Governor General comes out in the fifth, a maiden over 1 600m, to try and break his duck having lost narrowly in all three of his starts to date.
He might not have it all his own way though as Rahkee from the Dennis Drier yard caught the eye the last time he was at Scottsville when appearing to be full of running coming into the final 200m in a 1 400m maiden.
The winner that day, Kaizar, found extra when challenged and then won first time out of the maidens over 1 450m at Clairwood so the form is not bad.
In the ninth, a 72 MR Handicap over 1000m, the Kumaran Naidoo-trained Ricky My Son looks to represent good value at 20-1 as he is one merit rated pointed lower than when finishing a good second over course and distance to Lune De Miele three runs ago.
