Online trading has it’s advantages
David Thiselton
A function hosted by Gavelhouse, the world’s number one site for trading horses online, held at Rawdons in the KwaZulu- Natal Midlands at the end of July, had the attendees very impressed, including Chairman of the KZN Breeders Association, Warwick Render.
Render made the important point that the founding director of Gavelhouse, Gary Moore, is an industry person who was advised on computer technology rather than the other way around, so has an intimate knowledge of the thoroughbred industry.
Moore, an Australian, has 25 years of racing and breeding experience.
The website covers every aspect of thoroughbred sales
from weanlings, yearlings, horses-in-training, broodmares, stallions and more, and can also be used to advertise stallion cover fees.
The cost of advertising is low. An individual would be able to advertise a horse for less than it would cost him to enter it in a sale and no commission is charged either.
Stud farms can pay a set fee that enables them to advertise an unlimited amount of horses as well as stallion fees.
Render felt that the website would not replace conventional means of selling horses, but provides a huge opportunity and will play an increasing role going forward.
“Gavelhouse have done a fantastic job,” said Render.
“It is a viable asset and can be used to market horses prior to or after a sale and also to market those horses that aren’t going to the sales. It is basically a very reasonable form of advertising, but is also a very good place to do your homework.
“It will obviously become more and more viable the more the people that get to know about it and the more horses that are registered. In this way people will become used to doing their shopping on their.
“One of the biggest advantages is that international markets are reached. Australians using Gavelhouse have already picked up international buyers from places like Hong Kong, Singapore, America and Ireland.”
There have even been cases of stallions being sold to overseas concerns via the website.
Gavelhouse currently operates in South Africa, Australia & New Zealand, and is growing on a daily basis.
Moore firmly believes online trading is the way of the future and said in a recent press release, “Its advantages are easy access, immediacy, and its ability to reach both local and large, international audiences of vendors and potential buyers.
“Vendors can list any time and from anywhere, eliminating costly delays of waiting for scheduled auctions and expensive associated fees. Buyers similarly can browse or buy whenever and from wherever they choose.”
Creating a listing, which includes photographs and detailed supporting documentation, is simple, the process completely supported and facilitated by Gavelhouse staff. Interested parties can register for free at www.gavelhouse.com.
