Klawervlei Stud heats up (part 2 of 2 )
David Thiselton - continues from part 1
Seventh Rock is a big, black imposing horse, who makes his presence felt, and he created a stir at the Klawervlei Stallion day.
In fact 23 bookings were made on the day.
In total he has been booked 120 mares including the dam of Jay Peg, Laptop Lady (Al Mufti), the Grade 1 Thekwini winner Roxanne (Western Winter), the Listed winner Child Model (Model Man), Es La Vida (Al Mufti) who is the full-sister to Captain Al, and the Listed winner Blow Your Mind (National Emblem).
Jay Peg (Camden Park), the highest stakes earner in South African history, has a book of 100 mares in this, his second season. He got 88 mares into foal last year at a 93-94% fertility rate and one colt, described as a “cracker”, has been born to date. Rebel King has also been booked 100 mares in his second season.
Five Rebel King foals have been born to date and they are described as “very nice, strong and stocky sprinting types.”
Count Du Bois has been booked 90 mares this season. Klawervlei’s stalwart stallion over the years, National Emblem, is getting on a bit, being 19 years old now, and only has a book of 60 mares this year.
Besides Seventh Rock, there are two other first season sires at Klawervlei currently, the New Zealand-bred Oracy (Zabeel) and the Irish-bred Group 1 Diadem Stakes (Ascot) winner, King's Apostle (King’s Best).
Oracy has been booked 60 mares while King's Apostle has a book of 100.
Two other Kalwervlei-owned stallions, the Australian-bred Requiem (Danehill) and Lion Tamer (Western Winter) will be standing with Sue Winter at Avalon Stud in KwaZulu-Natal. Lion Tamer had just under 50 mares last season and his foals are said to be “outstanding’’.
Prospects are looking good for Klawervlei, although on a sadder note the Australian-bred Nodoubt Deja (Redoute's Choice), who was the equal record-priced horse ever sold as a yearling in Australia, has died.
