Klawervlei Stud heats up (part 1 of 2)
David Thiselton
Klawervlei Stud, where South Africa’s leading racehorse owner Markus Jooste has a considerable stake, will be having a very busy breeding season this year.
Captain Al, by former Champion Stallion Al Mufti, has become their most sort after stallion having finished second on the National Sires’ log two seasons ago and third last season. He smashed his own sire of two-year-old's record in the 2008/2009 season, sending out 30 winners of 40 races, and was the leading two-year-old sire last season once again. Captain Al has sired three Grade 1 winners to date, Captain's Lover, Exhilaration and Captain's Gal.He also became the first South African-bred sire to have a Group winner in Europe, when Captain’s Lover won the Group 3 Prix du Pin over seven furlongs at Longchamp in September 2008. Klawervlei closed Captain Al’s book at 100 mares and he has been sent phenomenal quality, including thirteen individual stakes winners.Included among these are the Grade 1 Allan Robertson winner Geepee S (Goldkeeper), Grade 1 Thekwini winner Nania (Western Winter), the unbeaten Allan Robertson winner Private Reserve (Model Man), dual Grade 2 winner Joshua’s Princess (Joshua Dancer), Grade 2 winner Carry On Katie (Western Winter), Listed winner and three-times Grade 2 runner-up School Assembly (National Assembly), Grade 3 winner Oracle News (London News), recent Grade 3 and Listed winning Irish-bred Katici Princess (Noverre), the Listed winning Australian-bred Miss Galilei (Galileo), the Grade 3 winning British-bred Purple Orchid (Dr Fong) and the Grade 2 winner Badger's Cove (Joshua Dancer).
Another very popular Klawervlei stallion has been the Australian-bred Rock Of Gibraltar stallion, Seventh Rock, winner of the Grade 1 Gold Medallion in 2007. This will be Seventh Rock’s first season. He was sent back to Australia after his success here in order to attempt to win a Grade 1 race there, but having failed to do so he returned to stand here.
