Exclaim‘N’Exclude can steal the show - part one
David Thiselton
Scottsville has an eight-race meeting tomorrow and the most interesting horse on the card is the Charles Laird-trained Grade 1 performer Exclaim‘N’Exclude, (pictured above) a very impressive looking horse by Exceed And Excel, who returns from a rest of just over a year.
Exclaim‘N’Exclude made a fine debut, winning over 1 100m by 3,5 lengths under Felix Coetzee, and then ran third in two Grade 1 two-year-old races over 1 200m and 1 400m respectively.
Laird felt that Exclaim‘N’Exclude had done enough in his recent work to be able to win here, although he did add that he was a horse who showed that he would prefer a mile.
Coetzee is reunited with him and his class might pull him through. Our Smoking Joe enjoyed being stepped back to this course and distance las time and won well, although he is a massive 11kg out at the weights with Exclaim 'N Exclude on official merit ratings.
Chief Mambo is 11,5kg out, but could earn if repeating his penultimate run over course and distance.
Exclaim‘N’Exclude’s stablemate, Danse To Destiny, is second best in at the weights and has a 2,5kg claimer aboard but might prefer a touch further. Gleneagles shows ability at home so could earn if deciding to put it in.
In the first race over 1 000m the Glen Kotzen-trained Colonial Style has the form over this distance to win.
She banged her head badly in the pens last time and wasn't persevered with so that run can be completely ignored.
Stuart Ferrie of the Dennis Drier yard gave Keep The Key a chance, pointing out that some of her best form has been over sprints so she might appreciate the step down in trip.
Kumaran Naidoo gave Figurine a “decent chance” on form, saying that although she has her problems she is currently “fit and well.’’
Charles Laird’s Impromptu ran on well over 1 600m last time and the form looks good. Laird felt he only had the Glen Kotzen-trained Mon Signor to beat in the second over 1 750m.
On formlines, the Paul Lafferty-trained Urban looks considerably better than Mon Signor. On the other hand Mon Signor might not have enjoyed the soft ground in his last start.
Julie Dittmer gave her charge Six In A Row a chance, saying he wasn't persevered with last time. He has shown signs of ability, notably when a 3,1 length fourth to Forecastle, and from pole position can’t be ignored.
Nathan Kotzen only gave Coco Stripes a small each-way chance, saying that although he will appreciate the step up in trip he would need another run to be at his peak.
Ferrie felt Eloise would “go close’’ in the third over 1 600m and the form plus her good draw bears him out.
Craig Eudey felt Frosty Song had a good chance too as she ran green and needed the run when running well on debut. She has a wide draw to overcome though.
Garth Puller’s Lineal Factor had to come from off the pace when going close over 1 400m last time, so should be closer in the running in this small field.
