New heights for Ready To Run
The Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale has broken new ground again. A meeting of its various stakeholders has agreed that the targeted stake for the 2011 renewal of the Ready To Run Cup (for graduates of this year’s 5th November sale) would be a whopping R2million, ranking the race behind only the “Big Three”, the Vodacom Durban July, the J&B Met and the Sansui Summer Cup in prize money terms.
While the prize ultimately depends on the subscription of breeders, owners and sponsors alike, the history of the event and its popularity suggest this is just a formality.
An oversubscription for this year’s R1,5million version is a tribute to the appetite investors have developed for this kind of sale, as well as the remarkable record its graduates have compiled at the races.
The winners of both this year’s colts and fillies Gauteng Guineas, Pierre Jourdan and Fisani, graduated from the 2008 sale, together with Havasha, runner-up in each of the Johannesburg and Durban versions of the Guineas.
In keeping with the “sweepstake” philosophy of the sale, the surplus from last year’s subscription will be applied to the funding of five trials leading up to the 2010 running of the “Cup;” two in Gauteng for R100 000 each, two in KZN for R80 000 a piece, and one in the Western Cape.
The staging of these trials is intended to provide prospective candidates with preferential opportunities to qualify, and the distribution has been addressed on the basis of where the bulk of the horses are dispersed. Phumelela and Gold Circle will make appropriate announcements shortly, but it is understood the events will be staged over 1 200m and 1 400m respectively.
Emerging from last Friday’s meeting, Summerhill’s Mick Goss, understandably delighted at developments, said “It’s what our customers deserve. They have voted with their feet in helping us to grow the Ready To Run and its associated events, and the horses have done the rest. The least we could do as consignors, was to show our appreciation, and we have our fellow stakeholders to thank for their unqualified support.”
