The Apache can count coup part 2 of 2

David Thiselton - continues from part 1 - The Apache can count coup
In the fourth, a Novice over 1 600m, the Charles Laird-trained Western Front won well over 1 450m on debut at this course and the form of that race has worked out very well, with the highly regarded Perana finishing a two-lengths second with the likes of The Apache, Old Mac Donald and Kumba-Ya finishing further back. Western Front disappointed over 1 200m next time but wasn’t disgraced in a Grade 1 last time and back at this course from a good draw he could show some of his promise again. His danger could be stablemate High Accolade, the Alec Laird-trained Kapellmeister as well as the Argentinian-bred Bielorruso, who is interestingly stepped up in trip from a good draw with Felix Coetzee aboard, as he has run two fine races over sprints among two other below par performances. In the fifth, a Novice over 1 200m, the Drier-trained Never Forever has impressed on more than one occasion, especially down the straight. He is drawn on the wrong side but it is not a big field so shouldn’t be a major hinderance. The Charles Laird-trained Var gelding, Timeofreckoning, is out of a Fine Edge mare so is very speedily bred and slammed a weak field by 6,5 lengths on debut. This is a much harder task, but Marcus is aboard while the other promising Laird contender, Elusive River, will have 1,5kg claimer Jassurick Jordaan aboard. The De Kock-trained Kentucky Express is useful and has his third run after a rest while the Des Egdes-trained Hot Rocket had the field strung out behind her on debut.
The Bass-trained What A Winter won over 1 000m on debut and will appreciate the extra 200m. The fancies to fight out the staying handicap race over 2 500m in the next are two who have shown a liking for this trip, Lucky Star and Hawk’s Eye, while the unreliable Tailormade can’t be left out having been raised only two points after his win over 2 500m on Vodacom Durban July day. In the seventh, Mike’s Ideal only lost on objection over 2 000m last time. She loves fast ground, which she will get, and as she tired late in that last race, this 1 800m trip from a great draw should be ideal. Lallan and Water Nymph look the dangers. The last, a MR 70 Handicap over 1 450m, sees the Kumaran Naidoo yard in with a good chance with Spirit Of Success. He went close last time despite being hampered. The form has worked out well and he is well drawn again.
