The Apache can count coup - part 1 of 2
David Thiselton
The Clairwood meeting tomorrow has eight races, but as is the norm at this time of the year features some interesting first-timers and other inexperienced sorts. In the first race, a maiden over 1 200m, Mike Bass sends out the Australian-bred Castlethorpe, who is an impressive looking specimen.
Furthermore this Not A Single Doubt colt is out of the Sadler’s Wells mare, Park Heiress, who is a half-sister to the brilliant Derby winner and four-time Group 1 winner from 1 400-2 400m, New Aproach, as well as to the sire Shinko Forest. Castlethorpe made a pleasing debut over course and distance at the beginning of July when finishing fifth and four winners have already come out ofthat race. He is drawn on the right side, the standside, as far as recent trends have gone. Castlethorpe is up against some interesting debutants including the Charles Laird-trained New Zealand-bred Galileo colt, Galileo’s Destiny, who is out of a Danehill half-sister to a French Grade 2 winner.
Sean Tarry sends out a full-brother to Gold Cup winner Desert Links, Selborne Supremacy, Mike de Kock sends out the Brazilian-bred Dodge colt, Up Company, and Dennis Drier sends out the Australian-bred My Best Pal, who is by Iglesia out of a Danehill mare. In the second over 1 450m, De Kock sends out a Right Approach filly debutant from a good draw. Right Approach has made a good start to his stud career and an Alec Laird-trained Right Approach first-timer, Goose Valley, also makes her debut with Felix Coetzee aboard. The in form Dennis Drier sends out Grammatica, a half-sister to the useful sprinter-miler School Assembly. She improved in her second start and is well drawn for her debut around the turn. Being by Caesour, she should appreciate the step up in trip.
The De Kock-trained Old Heritage, making her debut at the age of four, is a full sister to the useful Autumn Frost and Winter Weather, so is another interesting one. The Bart Rice-trained Chingola, who is nicely drawn, the Yogas Govender-trained Rumba Baby and the Neil Bruss-trained Footsteps are the experienced horses that are in with a chance, although all three of them appear moderate to date. In the third, a maiden over 1 600m, the Gavin van Zyl-trained The Apache was arguably unlucky last time as he was carried accross the course over 1 600m at Greyville and only lost by a neck. The winner of that race, English Garden, is held in good regard by the Bass yard, so The Apache could make amends from a nice draw with Anthony Delpech keeping the ride. The Sean Tarry-trained Jet Master colt Toophan is an interesting debutant here as a four-year-old from a good draw.
