Emir holds the key for punters
Chad Cooke
Recent race meetings have offered mixed fortunes for punters and tomorrow's (Thursday, August 12) Vaal card could be one that follows in that vein.
The eight-race card will take place on the turf with the sixth race being the main event of the day.
This 90 MR Handicap over 1400m sees 14 runners lock horns and everything looks to hinge on the fortunes of the top weight, Emir.
Emir, a seven-year-old son of Kahal trained at Turffontein by Gary Alexander, is something of a distance specialist with five wins and five placings from 14 efforts over the trip.
The gelding has shown himself to be more than capable and his last effort, coming off a layoff, was impressive.
He contested 1 200m sprint on the sand at the Vaal and was full of running late.
He will strip a far fitter horse for that effort and with Piere Strydom in the irons looks set to be the horse to beat.
As said, the fortunes of Emir could dictate the fortunes of punters, particularly where the exotic bets are concerned, and especially the Pick 6.
Alexander’s charge is the only horse that makes any appeal as a banker and if he fails to take top honours then the Pick 6 could pay a very handsome dividend.
A race that forms part of the Pick 6 and one that is worth watching is the fourth race, a fillies and mares Novice Plate over 1 700m.
Trainer Geoff Woodruff saddles two promising fillies in this contest. Maxine is a recent maiden winner but did it impressively and in her just her third career run while Stars In My Eyes is far better than her last effort which was in the sand and looks set to pick up on her turf efforts prior to that. Both Woodruff inmates have lots of scope and they should be worth watching beyond this meeting.
