David praises A Daughters Legacy
MICHAEL CLOWER

Derrick David had his first taste of Kenilworth last Saturday. He rode a double and enjoyed it all so much that he has vowed to come back as often as he can.
The champion apprentice of two seasons ago, and the man who won this year’s Gauteng Guineas and SA Classic, landed the Final Fling Stakes on A Daughters Legacy who won with Pierre Jourdan-type authority.
This remarkable Lionel Cohen-bred Windrush mare has now won four in a row, going up 12 points in the merit ratings in the process. David was able to settle her in a comfortable third and she drew right away from a furlong and half out to slam the Bass pair Splinter and Final Approach by four lengths.
David said: “She won in a common canter. Furthermore she feels like a horse who is full of improvement.”
Trainer Riaan Van Reenen missed the race as he is on holiday in Romania and some of his co-owners (George Eveleigh, Ferdy Louw, Owen Rosslind and Criselda Swart) are feeling the strain.
“This is the sixth race she’s won and each time my heart really pounds,” admitted Eveleigh, massaging the affected area in a bid to ease the pressure.
David earlier scored a narrow 1 600m maiden win (race three) on Australian-bred Mahoihoi for Eric Sands and Maine Chance.
He said: “Gavin Hunter helped me get rides today and I intend coming here whenever I’m not riding in Jo’burg.”
Gerrit Schlechter’s ears would have been burning had he not heard it all so often before, after being praised to the heavens for getting up on Motorized in the shadow of the post in the 1 400m handicap (race five).
Greg Ennion, who trains the 11-1 shot for Marsh Shirtliff and Hassen Adams, said: “That was a fantastic ride. I told Gerrit that the going is very sticky and that this is not a wet weather horse. Therefore, when he ‘s ready to go, Gerritt should slowly count to ten and then go.”
Schlechter had hoped to win the opening maiden on Bastille Day but his mount was treated like somebody caught up in the storming of the famous prison. He was knocked sideways and was lucky to stay on his feet. Fareed Anthony made all on Heralds Bay for Alan Higgins and Willem Engelbrecht.
Royal Bounty travelled back from Durban on Sunday and Monday and bounced out fresh as paint for the 1 000m handicap (race six), with Gavin Wright making every metre on Hassen Adams’ four-year-old.
Justin Snaith doubled up when the Richard Fourie-ridden Tryst held the renewed challenge of outsider Ulwandle close home in the concluding 1 200m handicap. The winner then survived a race review - much to the relief of Jack and Nancy Mitchell, the father-and-daughter team who own the filly.
Greg Cheyne, who rode Ulwandle, had better luck on the Van Reenen-trained Purification in the 2 200m maiden (race two) while Grant van Niekerk was seen to good effect on Brian Clark’s Vital Match in the 1 400m handicap two races later. The Ronnie Sheehan-trained winner was backed from 12-1 to 6-1.
