Champion Stakes and Garden Province previews
David Thiselton

Champion Stakes
The Grade 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes over 1 600m sees De Kock in with a strong chance with Kavanagh, who should apprciate the step up to a mile.
He beat Copper Parade by a short-head last time but the result was reversed after an objection, so Kavanagh will be looking for revenge. Copper Parade has a tough draw to ovecome.
The Assayer should run better than last time, while Perana and English Garden also make place appeal.
The Grade 1 Durban Thekwini Stakes could fall to the well drawn Sean Tarry-
trained Happy Archer, the only concern being whether she will see out the distance. She has a lot of speed, but Tarry would prefer a strong pace to help her relax.
Chatanooga Chuchu is a nice looking horse and caught the eye when winning her maiden, so she could surprise. Six Blue Notes ran on well last time in a Grade 1 over 1 450m but is widely drawn here again.
The classy Legal Account is better drawn than last time and should relish the step up in trip.
Fragrant Al has a chance but is also widely drawn.

Garden Province
The Grade 1 Garden Province over 1600m is a tough race, but Dance With Al finished a close second in the KRA Fillies Guineas over course and distance last season and was running on strongly over 1 400m here last time so she gets the vote.
Imperious Star is perfectly drawn for her front-running style and Prestic is sparingly raced but always goes close and is drawn in pole.
Autumn Gold has improved lengths since arriving in Durban and will enjoy this distance while Captain’s Gal is top class but for a handy type her wide draw is against her.
