Silver Apples to go all the way
DAVID THISELTON
The highest rated race at Scottsville today (Wednesday July 14) is the sixth, a Merit Rated 93 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1 400m. The Dean Kannemeyer-trained Silver Apples finished second to the talented Jo Piper in her last start over 1 600m despite pulling hard early.
If she settles this time she might be the one to beat as the form of her two Champions Season starts has worked out very well. The only concern is her wide draw of 10.
The Paul Lafferty-trained Born In Space finished a 1,45 lengths fifth to the promising Forecastle over 1600m last time and a winner has already come out of that race.
She beat Lemonade in a 1 450m handicap at Clairwood by over two lengths in May despite having been bumped at the start and having to be switched. She has a fair draw.
The Michael de Beer-trained Lemonade probably needed that aforementioned run after a three month break. Last time she just failed over 1 600m here at Scottsville, a run that should have brought her close to her peak. She will have Felix Coetzee aboard from a fair draw of seven, but the one concern is that she made a breathing noise in that last start.
The Alec Lard-trained Casey Da Lady finished well in her Champions Season debut over 1 400m at Greyville.
The form of that run has worked out very well, one of the eyecatching aspects being that she beat Taiki Dancer by 2,6 lengths and the latter then came out and beat Lemonade.
Furthermore she is drawn in pole position. The Dennis Drier-trained Sahara once finished second in the Grade 2 KZN Fillies Guineas.
She enjoys this distance and has only been unplaced once in six starts at Scottsville. She won her penultimate start over course and distance and although she is drawn wide this time she is effectively only a point higher in the merit ratings.
The Michael de Beer-trained Celtic Cross probably needed her first Champions Season start badly when leading at Clairwood before tiring.
She had good Cape Town form over this trip, beating Silver Apples on 0,5kg worse terms than here by 0,6 lengths in January. However, Silver Apples didn’t enjoy the best of luck in that race.
Celtic Cross, a front-runner, is also widely drawn and this is her second start after a rest.
Propiciada finished second in the Grade 3 Umzimkhulu over course and distance in April and beat Silver Apples last time on these same terms over 1 600m by 0,25 lengths.
The latter probably needed that run, her first after a rest, and Propiciada is also very widely drawn.
Air Pocket finished 1,5 lengths behind Propiciada in the Umzimkhulu add is 1,5kg better off now. River Moy won a handicap at Turffontein in her last start over 1 450m but the form hasn’t worked out too well and she returns from a 123 day rest. So Impressed is talented but appears to have breathing problems and can’t be relied on.
Danceofthespirits finished a one length second to Autumn Gold in her penultimate start over 1 200m and the latter has had excellent form since.
Danceofspirits has done well over this trip before too. Upity Ann might find this too far. The selection is Silver Apples to win from Born In Space, Lemonade, Casey Da Lady and Sahara.
