It’s simply Sunsational
David Thiselton
Greyville hosts a meeting on Friday night (July 9) that should be well attended with the city still full of World Cup buzz and sporting events firmly instilled in the general psyche.
Race six, a Conditions Plate for Fillies and Mares over 1 400m, is the main race on the card and the Mike Bass yard could notch up another Champions Season win with the four-year-old Windrush filly, Sunsational.
She is the best in at the weights here thanks to her win in the Grade 3 Prix Du Cap over 1 400m at Kenilworth in February. That race showed that she is effective over this distance despite having spent most of her career racing from 1 600 to 2 000m.
She showed effective early pace in that race too which allowed her to secure a good position in the running from a good draw. She produced a fine finish from off the pace to beat some good horses, including the likes of Sparkling Gem. She is drawn in pole tonight.
The two concerns is that she has only
ever been around a right hand turn once, when unplaced in the Grade 2 Gold Bracelet over 2 000m last time, and she will also
likely need a good pace to produce her best.
The Sean Tarry-trained Autumn Gold has produced two fine efforts over this sort of distance in her last two starts finishing runner up to a pair of top class horses in River Jetez and Gibraltar Blue respectively, both when unfavourably weighted. If she repeats either of those two runs she should be a big runner here, with an advantage being that she has experience of this course and distance at night. She does have quite a wide draw to overcome though, which is a concern as in her last start in the Tibouchina she found a good position for free from a good draw, before finishing strongly.
Jo Piper has plenty of speed over sprints and has also done very well since being stepped up to 1 600m. She has a nice draw here and should love this distance. The Charles Laird-trained Flowing Amber is yet to run a bad race and could be a progressive sort. She won well over course and distance with a big weight last time and is better drawn this time. Candy Singer ran below par in the Tibouchina when widely drawn and racing wide. She has won over course and distance before and it would be no surprise to see her bouncing back and winning this. The very consistent Seal Of Approval is a 1 200-1 400m specialist, but doesn’t have the best of draws. She was unplaced in the Tibouchina but that was her first Durban start and she could improve this time.
She is not too badly in at the weights except in relation to Sunsational with whom she is 4,5kg under sufferance. Purple Orchid has been outclassed in her first two Durban starts over sprints and doesn’t have it easy here either having to carry topweight from a wide draw. Nimley loves this course and distance and wasn’t disgraced in the Tibouchina. She is 3kg under sufferance with Sunsational but could be the dark horse with her light weight, although she isn’t well drawn. The selection is Sunsational to beat home Autumn Gold with Jo Piper, Flowing Amber and Candy Singer next best.
