Salamander Sue runs a cracker
David Thiselton
The Yogas Govender-trained Salamander Sue, ridden by Corne Orffer, ran on strongly to land the Listed Queen Palm Handicap over 2 400m at Scottsville on Tuesday at odds of 20-1.
Salamander Sue, a five-year-old home-bred mare by Lizard Island is owned by Sabine Plattner.
She jumped from draw five and sat in the midfield as the Port Elizabeth raider from the Gavin Smith yard, Harbour Light, set a good gallop. Harbour Light became involved in a ding dong battle with the Herman Brown-trained Miss Chatty in the straight, but Salamander Sue was full of running and passed them to win going away by 1,5 lengths.
Harbour Light fought bravely all the way to the line, but was just pipped for second by Miss Chatty.
This pair started at 25-1 and 7-1 respectively.
Gilmore Girl, who started 7-2 second favourite, came with a dangerous run from the back, but didn’t appear to go all the way through with it and was just pipped by Harbour Light for third.
The favourite, the Joey Ramsden-trained Pagan Princess, sat last in the running, but didn’t find much in the straight and finished 11,4 lengths back in ninth.
