Imperious Star to cement July spot
David Thiselton
The Grade 2 Gold Bracelet to be run over 2 000m is one of the supporting features on Saturday at Greyville and Imperious Star makes most appeal.
She will need to cement her place in the Vodacom Durban July and is said by Glen Kotzen to be in magnificent shape. River Jetez was highly impressive in her last start against lesser opposition, but has booked her July place already and might not be at her peak just yet. Her Grade 1 winning stable companion Love Is In The Air will be in the same boat. Goat’s disappointing run in the Cup Trial can be excused as she returned with a bruised hoof. She will need to win here to make sure of getting into the July, although the concern as a horse that comes from off them is that Imperious Star was able to dictate a slow pace in the Woolavington and could do so again here unless Bedloe’s Island or Sunsational take her on. Jet Trail was just 0,55 lengths behind in the Woolavington when lying handy and will have a chance from pole position.
The rest of the field could all earn on their day. The selection is Imperious Star from River Jetez, Love Is In The Air, Goat and Jet Trail. The Grade 2 Tibouchina over 1400m sees SA Fillies Sprint first and second, Captain’s Gal and Gibraltar Blue, renewing their rivalry. Captain’s Gal is 1kg better off and won easily in a feature over 1 600m the last time she came to this course. Gibraltar Blue will appreciate the step up in trip and was an impressive front-running winner of the KRA Guineas here. Sparkling Gem won’t make it easy for her up front though. Prestic never runs a bad race and seems to enjoy running fresh. Dance With Al disappointed the yard last time in the SA Fillies but could bounce back. The selection is Captain’s Gal to beat home Gibraltar Blue with Sparkling Gem, Prestic and Dance With Al next best. In the Listed Thukela Handicap over 1 600m the talented three-year-old Galanthus has a fine turn of foot and will be attempting to book his July place. He returns from a layoff over his favourite distance. Thandolwami has a fine record over this course and distance and has Kevin Shea up. Meltaway was backed last time and could bounce back while the Justin Snaith stable are confident that Russian Sage is back to his best and are expecting a big run.
