Fortune takes time out
David Thiselton
Champion jockey Andrew Fortune might be out for the rest of the season.
Fortune made what he described as a "life-changing" decision in deciding to attend a specialised clinic in George where he will first attempt to understand his body and then gain control over it.
"My weight fluctuates wildly and goes to 61kg, 63kg, 62kg at a moment's notice," he said. "I have to ride at 58kg and I can't continue like this. As everybody knows I have messed around with my body most my life and just have no understanding of it. This clinic houses everything under one roof. It has dieticians, sports psycologists and fitness instructors etc. I will spend some time here, but that will just be the start. This must turn into a life-changing excercise or otherwise I will have to consider giving up riding."
Fortune, who had to give up his ride on Big City Life in the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge last Saturday, has already been at the clinic for about a week and is feeling the benefit.
He was aiming to be back by the start of the new racing season, which kicks off in August, although he didn't rule out an earlier return.
