Marcus back after taking both barrels
David Thiselton
Basil Marcus is back at work in Singapore after surviving a nasty double-barrelled kick from a horse without any long-term damage and his son Adam said from Summerveld yesterday “my Dad has an angel on his shoulder.’’
Marcus was down at the trotting ring towards the back of the Kranji racecourse last week when one of his gallopers tried to escape.
As the horse went by it lashed out with both legs, catching him on the left side of his face and apparently on a return trip the former champion jockey was lucky not to be kicked in the chest.
Marcus lost three front teeth, his chin was split open and he had bruising to his left cheek bone.
The kick knocked him unconscious, a state in which he remained until he was in the ambulance. There he woke up briefly before passing out again.
He only regained full consciousness in hospital, but could not remember a thing about the incident.
Adam said, “He was given a full cat scan and an EEG. He had no broken bones and there was no swelling to the brain. The doctors said it was a miracle.’’
He continued, “He had lost his teeth before in a fall at Scottsville. It will just be a case of replacing his Hollywood smile.’’
In typical fashion the meticulous Marcus didn’t forget his horses while in hospital.
“He was issuing instructions from his hospital bed,’’ said Adam.
Marcus had two runners over the weekend, Polished Steel finishing unplaced on Friday and Trebes finishing fourth in his race on Saturday.
His table jockey Sean Cormack rode a double on Saturday to increase his number of winners since arriving in mid-March to ten.
