Greys Inn replaces Strike Smartly
David Thiselton
Gavin Schafer, stud manager of Bridget Oppenheimer’s Mauritzfontein Stud, said yesterday that the 2004 Vodacom Durban July winner, Greys Inn, would become the chief substitute for the late Strike Smartly.
“Greys Inn’s first foals have been awesome,” said Schafer.
“They can be compared to Fort Wood’s first foals. We are very excited about his prospects as a stallion.”
Mauritzfontein had booked about 25 of their own mares to Strike Smartly.
About 80 percent of these would now be covered by Greys Inn.
Greys Inn is a son of the phenomenal New Zealand Champion sire, Zabeel, who is a son of the legendary Sir Tristram.
Zabeel’s damsire, Nureyev, is by Northern Dancer, which will make Greys Inn a suitable line-breeding cross for the vast majority of South African mares.
Strike Smartly, whose progeny have begun to set the racetracks alight, died of suspected heart failure last Monday morning.
He produced the dual Grade 1 winner, Smart Banker, the Grade 1 SA Derby winner, Bouquet-Garni, and stakes winners Prestic, Robinson Crusoe, Sweet Theresa and Moon Storm from his first two crops.
There have been a number of very promising youngsters emerging from his third crop too, including the exciting winners on debut, Rich Strike and Two Tone.
