Sun Classique retired to stud
CHAMPION race mare Sun Classique has been retired from racing, reports Sarah Whitelaw on aro.co.za. She is likely to be bred to top Australian stallion Redoute’s Choice in her first season at stud.
Sun Classique, owned by Warne and Wendy Rippon and Lionel and Caroline Cohen, has not raced since winning the Dubai Sheema Classic in March of 2008.
Prior to her sojourn in Dubai, where she was unbeaten in three starts, Sun Classique raced with great success in South Africa. Sun Classique won six of her 12 starts in South Africa and was named Equus Champion three-year-old filly of her year.
Her biggest wins in South Africa included the Cape Fillies Guineas, Majorca Stakes and Woolavington 2200, all of which are Gr1 events. She was also second in both the Gp1 Thekwini Stakes and Paddock Stakes.
Trained by Mike de Kock in Dubai, Sun Classique proved a sensation. When triumphant in the Sheema Classic, she had all of Viva Pataca (Horse of the Year), Doctor Dino (triple Gp1 winner), Quijano (Gran Premio di Milano), Youmzain (twice 2nd in the Arc), Better Talk Now (Breeders Cup Turf) and West Wind (French Oaks) well beaten.
Bred in Australia, the chestnut Sun Classique is by the undefeated Fuji Kiseki. Her dam, Elfenjer, is by champion sire Last Tycoon out of the classic winning mare Gamine.
Her first mate, Redoute’s Choice, a former champion sire in Australia, is having another excellent year down under. The son of Danehill is currently second on the Australian general sires list for the 2008/2009 season.
His 15 stakes winners this year include the top filly Samantha Miss as well as Musir, an impressive winner of the Gr1 Golden Horseshoe on July day.
Previous Gr1 winners for Redoute’s Choice include Stratum, God’s Own, Miss Finland, Cheeky Choice, Anamato and Empires Choice. Redoute’s Choice is also the sire of the stakes winner Not A Single Doubt, one of Australia’s leading first crop sires.
