Sibaya Sale offers value for money
Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom near Umhlanga Rocks hosts their annual Yearling Sale this week. The sale has become a renowned value-for-money sale where shrewd buyers have in recent years managed to find such gems as Gr 1 winners Disappear, who proved that the R55 000 paid for him in 2002 was money well spent, and Legally Blonde, who cost a mere R30 000 in 2003.
In 2004, R90 000 secured What A Question, who would go on to rack up two Gr 2’s and place in two Gr 1 sprints, while subsequent Gr 3 Peninsula hero Pinero sold for R85 000.
The 2008 sale already boasts a stakes winning graduate in Gr 2 Fillies Nursery victress Spring Clover, a bargain buy at just R45 000, while Fairy Queen, who was narrowly touched off in the Gr 1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship, cost just R70 000.
This year’s two-day sale at the Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom outside Durban, will be
conducted on Thursday and Friday, with a 300-strong
catalogue which features its usual quota of well-connected youngsters, representative of an impressive line-up of sires: from log leaders Jet Master, Captain Al, National Emblem, Jallad, Kahal and National Assembly, up-and-coming Silvano and Mogok, to promising freshman stallions Var, Victory Moon and Toreador.
A yearling sure to be on every serious buyer’s shortlist will be Break Dancer (Lot 233), a Joshua Dancer colt from the Avalon draft. Significantly, he is out of the Western Winter mare Maximum Break, a four-time winning half-sister to the outstanding Jet Master siblings and current July favourites, Pocket Power and River Jetez.
Sadler’s Wells stallion Casey Tibbs also finds himself in the spotlight through the exploits of his exceptional three-year-old colt Big City Life, winner of both the Gr 1 Investec Derby and the Gr 2 KRA Guineas and a leading contender for the July.
His seven youngsters include Hyjo’s Stud Royal Serenade, a half-sister to Winter Serenade, who won four.
