Yeats Wins UK Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup
Ballydoyle's star Irish-bred 8YO entire Yeats (Sadler's Wells-Lydonville, by Top Ville) who has won the Cartier Award as Champion European Stayer for the last 3 years, scored an historic 4th consecutive victory in the £250,000 (A$509,000) Gr1 Gold Cup (2.5 miles) for 4YOs & up on the 3rd day of the Royal Ascot carnival. Favourite Yeats (ridden by Johnny Murtagh for trainer Aidan O'Brien) took the lead before the home turn & raced away from his rivals in the straight for a 3.5-lengths win over Irish-bred 4YO entire Patkai (Indian Ridge-Olympienne, by Sadler's Wells) with a further 15-lengths back to French-bred 8YO gelding Geordieland (Johann Quatz-Aerdee, by Highest Honor). Yeats (who along with Geordieland both finished unplaced in the 2006 Gr1 Melbourne Cup) took his record to 15 wins (also including the 2006, 2007 & 2008 renewals of the Ascot Gold Cup, plus 2008's French Gr1 Prix Royal Oak-French St Leger over 3100m at Longchamp & the UK Gr2 Goodwood Cup over 2 miles, as well as 2007's Gr1 Irish St Leger over 14 furlongs at The Curragh, Irish Listed Vintage Crop Stakes over 13 furlongs at Navan & Irish Listed Saval Beg Stakes over 14 furlongs at Leopardstown, in addition to 2006's UK Gr2 Goodwood Cup over 2 miles, 2005's UK Gr1 Coronation Cup over 12 furlongs at Epsom Downs & both 2004's Irish Gr3 Ballysax Stakes & Gr2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial) & 3 placings (including 2007's French Gr1 Prix Du Cadran over 4000m at Longchamp & 2006's Gr1 Irish St Leger over 14 furlongs at The Curragh) from 24 starts for £1,288,902 (A$2.623m) earnings.
