Shark Attack
David Thiselton
A foal born on November 22 at the Summerveld Equine Hospital and owned by the Nicholas Ray Foundation Trust has been named Shark Attack by the Sharks Rugby team.
The foal, a colt by Casey Tibbs out of the Fahal mare, Far And Away, was officially named by Keegan Daniel on behalf of the Sharks at a champagne breakfast function at the Equine Hospital on Tuesday.
The mare and foal were then transported to Greg and Chelle Royden-Turner’s Roski Stud on Nutfield farm in Lidgetton near Nottingham Road, where they will spell free of charge until the colt is sent to one of the Sibaya Sales.
Greg Royden-Turner has recommended that, owing to the late birth of Shark Attack, Far And Away waits until next season before being covered again.
Ricky Smit, the founder of the Nicholas Ray Foundation Trust, said that interest from several potential owners had already been displayed, although it is hoped that the Sharks rugby team would eventually buy the colt.
Smit involved the Sharks in order to create awareness that horses are an outstanding form of rehabilitation for disabled people.
Cedric Mkhize, a former Sharks player, was recently paralysed from the waist down in a car accident and he might become a “face” of the Trust.
“There is life after accidents and somebody like Cedric could still become an accomplished rider,” said Smit.
Smit also believed that the horse could create a link between rugby and racing and the Shark’s presence on course would “lift the spirit of a racemeeting.”
A number of kind donations to the Nicholas Ray Foundation contributed to the foal’s birth.
The Summerveld Equine Hospital donated the mare and have looked after her since March this year.
Mark and Dorrie Sham of New Turf Carriers transported the mare to Hemel en Aarde Stud in Hermanus and back where she was looked after by David Hepburn-Brown.
John Koster of Klawervlei Stud donated a free service by Casey Tibbs and the covering took place under the supervison of Dr Sally Waddingham at Hemel en Aarde.
The eventual birth took place under the watchful eye of Ralph Katzwinkel and his team at Summerveld Equine Hospital.
The transport up to Roski Stud was sponsored by BP Cato Ridge.
