Sheik Mohammed splashes out
John Ferguson, chief bloodstock advisor to Sheikh Mohammed, was active in the ring on day one of the Tattersalls Timeform Millions October Yearling Sale at Newmarket on Tuesday.

Ferguson was responsible for the two most expensive purchases by mid-afternoon, as he splashed out 500,000 Guineas on an Oasis Dream half-brother to dual-Classic winner Finsceal Beo and 480,000 Guineas on a filly by fashionable sire Pivotal.

The Pivotal filly is a half-sister to the John Gosden-trained Centennial who put in a career-best performance when winning the Group 2 Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes at Goodwood in August.

It's been a fruitful year for Pivotal, the sire of two Classic winners in 2008, a fact emphasised by the multiple Group 1 wins of Halfway To Heaven.

And the Cheveley Park Stud flagbearer continued to attract the cash on Tuesday as lot 44 went for 300,000 Guineas to the Shadwell Estate, Angus Gold purchasing a colt out of Desert Prince mare Mail The Desert.

Ferguson purchased three more of Pivotal's offspring throughout the day.

Lot 53, a colt out of Sadler's Wells mare Maskunah, was bought for 200,000 Guineas before lot 56, a colt out of Mauri Moon went into Ferguson's hands for 50,000 less.

Another Pivotal colt, out of Needles And Pins, went the way of Sheikh Mohammed for 90,000 Guineas.

Irish vet Demi O'Byrne, bidding on behalf of Coolmore trio Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, made the second most expensive purchase of the morning for a Montjeu colt out of Grand Lodge mare Madeira Mist.

He went for 360,000 Guineas, to take O'Byrne's spending to 840,000 following the earlier purchase of a Sadler's Wells colt out of Nashwan mare La Mouline (280,000) and another Montjeu colt out of Leaping Water (200,000).

O'Byrne also purchased a Footstepsinthesand colt for 100,000 Guineas. - PA Sport
