De Kock off to a flyer at Turffontein
David Thiselton
At Turffontein Champion trainer Mike de Kock and jockey Anthony Delpech won the first two races on the card and by race four had already claimed a hat-trick. In the first, a maiden over 1 160m, de Kock’s Brazilian-bred colt Jetsons, by Gilded Time, won by a whisker on debut, beating the Brian Wiid-trained first-timer King’s Fantasy, a three-year-old by King Of Kings. Jetsons started favourite at 18-10. In the second, a maiden over 1 600m, his Kahal filly Checcetti started 9-20 favourite and travelled well throughout with first-time blinkers. She quickened clear from a handy position to win easing up by 7,5 lengths. Tony Moodley is a partner in both Jetsons and Checcetti and was on course to lead them in. In the fourth, a maiden over 1 600m, Delpech gave the Argentinian-bred three-year-old gelding Freedom a particularly good ride, bringing him into the lead from a wide draw and keeping him going in the straight to win by 1,75 lengths. Freedom started at odds of 3-1 having drifted out from 14-10. Piere Strydom claimed a double on the card.
At York in England on Friday the South African-bred Silvano six-year-old gelding, Kings Gambit, who won the Grade 1 SA Classic and Grade 1 SA Derby in 2008, ran a cracker in the Group 3 Strensall Stakes over a mile and one furlong. He shot into the lead in the straight from a handy position and fought on after being caught to finish a one length third to the Godolphin horse, Rio De La Plata.
