Kapil’s long career comes to an end
MICHAEL CLOWER
Kapil, winner of the 2006 KZN Guineas and placed in a host of top races, has been retired. Trainer Stan Elley said: “He is almost eight and I felt he wasn’t enjoying it anymore - and I wasn’t enjoying seeing him finish in mid-field.
“We’ve sent him to the Arc-En-Ciel Stud where he will hopefully spend the rest of his days.” The Jallad gelding was bred at Arc-En-Ciel and won eight of his 26 starts including a Listed race in Dubai but it is his gallant placed efforts for which he will be remembered. He was second in the Gold Challenge after winning the KZN Guineas, and he was also runner-up in the same race last year as well as in this season’s Queen’s Plate. In addition, he was third
in last year’s Queen’s Plate before finishing fourth in the J&B Met.
He was transferred to Mike de Kock at the end of his three-year-old season, won in Dubai and also raced in Britain. However, he injured a knee at Newmarket and was off for a year. In the interim he returned to South Africa to rejoin Elley. In recent months he has suffered from back problems. The gelding was owned by Mike Fullard, James Drew, Butch Watson-Smith and Cheryl Gabler while Arc-En-Ciel retained an interest. Joey Ramsden is adopting a wait-and-see policy with his Golden Horseshoe winner Copper Parade so far as Saturday week’s Premier’s Champion Stakes is concerned. He said: “Copper Parade has done very well since his Clairwood win but he has quite a high draw at Greyville and we want to see what the field looks like.” However, Justin Snaith reports Golden Slipper runner-up Fragrant Al a definite starter in the Durban Thekwini Stakes on the same Greyville card. Snaith said: “I was surprised how well she ran in the Golden Slipper. “She really only went to Durban as a companion for Dance With Al even though her work is as good as that filly. She’s drawn wide in the Thekwini Stakes but she is going to run.”
