JJ may miss Mercury Sprint
MICHAEL CLOWER
J J The Jet Plane, expected to start hot favourite for the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint at Clairwood on Sunday, is not a certain runner.
Lucky Houdalakis said: “We had a bit of a hiccup with him (a bruised foot) and he missed eight days’ work. It’s not 100% and, if I'm not happy with him, I’m not going to take him to Clairwood. I will make a decision during the week.’’
However Geoff Woodruff reports that his two sprinting stars of last season, Earl Of Surrey (Johnny Geroudis) and Private Jet (Felix Coetzee), are both on target and on song.
Private Jet burst a blood vessel when winning last year’s Computaform Sprint and then had two wind operations. He started second favourite for this year’s Computaform Sprint and ran well until fading in the final furlong.
The five-time champion trainer said: “Private Jet was a bit in need of his last run and he will definitely strip better from it. He has been doing well. Earl Of Surrey fractured his pelvis immediately after winning last year’s Golden Horse Casino Sprint but has been back in work a long time.
“He and Private Jet did a gallop over 1 000m on the Vaal sand and finished only short heads apart so I am pretty comfortable with him.’’
