Russian Sage is back to his best
Russian Sage arrived in Durban this week and is set to return to feature-race company in South Africa this weekend after a very disappointing international campaign.
Russian Sage will run in this Saturday’s Listed Thukela Handicap as part of his Vodacom Durban July preparation.
His first run back in South Africa was in a Pinnacle Plate over 1200m at Kenilworth on May 30, where he ran a good third after a rest of almost seven months.
Trainer Justin Snaith is confident about his charge in this year’s Vodacom Durban July.
“Russian Sage is starting to put in some serious work and I have him looking like he did when he won the Grade 1 Daily News.
Rehabilitation
“Barry Irwin (Russian Sage’s part owner) and I mapped out a rehabilitation program which has gone perfectly and I could not be happier with this horse.
“If he remains sound and well then I will have him at his very best come the Durban July.”
Richard Fourie was Russian Sage’s regular pilot and will once again take up the reigns in the July and the Thukela Handicap on Saturday.
Fourie was very positive about his mount: “I galloped Russian Sage last week at Kenilworth and I would not want to ride any other horse in the July - he is back.”
The son of Jallad is still an entire and will retire to stud in South Africa at the end of his racing career.
