Overseas bets affect TAB payouts
TAB customers should note that the increasing amount of overseas bets in TAB Win and Place pools on South African races is resulting in significant differences between the final official payouts and those displayed at the start of a race. Overseas bets currently comprise more than 30% of TAB Win and Place pools. At the Vaal meeting on 8 December, international bets comprised 43% of Place pools and 32% of Win pools.
Pools are closed immediately a race starts and no bets can be taken within South Africa or overseas after that. But it can take up to a minute after pools have closed for TAB’s computerised betting system to receive final pool totals from its international tote partners. Once these are received, TAB’s system instantly does a final scan and generates the final payouts. Given that huge amounts of money are bet in the last few seconds, it’s unavoidable that the payouts shown as a race starts change once the TAB system does its final scan.
TAB and overseas tote operators constantly monitor the flow of bets and it is hoped that as pool sizes increase, the impact of last-minute bets on payouts will diminish. Obviously ways are continually being sought to reduce the time between the start of a race and the final pool scan.
TAB customers should also note that there will be unusual tote payouts from time to time because some overseas customers bet substantial amounts on their lucky numbers, which can often comprise outsiders with no apparent chance on form.
