Mauritius May 2 - Short Corner back to strike!

Rajendra Bheekhary

A field of ten runners lines up for the the Rajcoomar Gujadhur Cup, main event of the meeting to be held on Saturday over the 1500 metres at Champ de Mar. Short Corner, scratched last week owing to a swollen tendon is back to strike. His task still looks tough but conditions seem to favour him over a distance that should be ideal for the Gilbert Rousset’s charge. Molten, Flavius, Ritz Cub and Jive Talking do have chances to win this race too.

Short Corner is unbeaten in his last five starts winning each time with style. The son of Parade Leader is improving constantly and looks fit despite that he met with some minor problems with his tendon last week. Short Corner worked well at the track and did also impress in his gallop. From his good draw, jockey Shane Dye should have no problem to position his mount in an ideal position until the crucial moment where he should make his move. Short Corner has got a finishing kick and should win his sixth race in a row.

Molten ran a little bit below expectations in his last start when beaten by Short Corner. Rameshwar Gujadhur’s charge will again carrying a heavy mass and will start from a wide draw. He has got class and a very good finish but he should have a tough race particularly if he is caught wide. However, if Molten benefited from a good jockeyship, he should make his presence felt at the finish.

Flavius ran above expectations in his last start. In fact the black gelding from the Serge Henry stable came good after a long spell owing to health problems. He finished a very good third close to Short Corner and with this run under the belt; he should give a better account of himself over a distance that suits him best. Flavius should not have any problem to travel handy and should he benefited from a clear run when entering the final straight, he should be a hard nut to crack.

Ritz Cub, winner of the Gold Cup last season over the 1600 metres looks a big threat here. Mahess Ramdin’s charge will have his first run this season but he has been prepared specially for this race. He is in a very good shape should thus give a good account of himself. He will start from a wide draw and as he likes to set his own pace or race close to the pacemakers, his jockey should have to use him in the early stages to get a good positioning. Ritz Cub should finish in the money.

Jive Talking disappointed last season as he still has to open his account here. He finished in the money five times out of eight starts but he never ran to his South African form. The break seems to have been beneficial for him as he looks a different horse since then. The grey gelding from the Ricky Maingard stable is in very good shape and under light weight looks the main danger to Short Corner.

Waves Of Winter ran an average race in his last start. He stayed one pace and looked to need the run. He showed good improvement at the track since then and he should run in the money this time. His stable companion, Winter Wind did not disgrace in his last start though he finished out of the money. He needed the run too and now over a distance that should suit him, he is likely to create an upset. Solar Symbol is a middle distance performer who won a race last season. He will have his first run this year and against some of the best sprinters who have already a run under the belt, his task looks tough. He is fit enough to earn a cheque in this field.
