The ultimate gathering of the country’s finest thoroughbreds, there is nothing like Champions Season to be found elsewhere on the African continent.
With more than R44-million in race stakes up for grabs, the country’s finest come together for a three-month feast of superior racing that rivals some of the leading racing festivals around the world.
Champions Season runs from the beginning of May to the end of July, with a programme of 54 graded, listed and special events headed by Africa’s greatest racing event, the R3.5-million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July.
Providing a comprehensive mix of events, Champions Season caters for all the needs of the thoroughbred population with major contests for two-year-olds, three-year-olds and the older horses from sprints through middle distance races to the strong-winded stayers.
Celebrating the importance of the classic races for three-year-olds, a special meeting is staged for the KRA Guineas and KRA Fillies Guineas over the traditional 1 600m. Another meeting is staged for the Track & Ball Derby and the Gold Circle Oaks to highlight the three-year-olds over 2400m. It is from these races that the great champions of the future could emerge.
For casual punters and racing enthusiasts alike, this all adds up to a great spectacle of high quality horseracing and helps to make Champions Season one of the greatest racing festivals of the world.
