Vodacom Durban July

The most adrenalin-packed two minutes in South African horseracing, the Vodacom Durban July sets the gold standard as Africa’s premier horseracing and social event and is the one race on the South African calendar that every trainer, jockey and owner dreams of winning.

Steeped in tradition, the Vodacom Durban July was first run in 1897 and has thundered on through two World Wars to become the world-class experience and the pinnacle of Champions Season and South African racing that it is today.

From its original 1 600m, the race is today a challenging 2 200m that showcases the beauty and might of South Africa’s best thoroughbreds as they storm down the home straight once a year in a breathtaking display of power.

Taking place on the first Saturday in July every year at Greyville Racecourse, and attracting the bold and the beautiful from around the country, the Vodacom Durban July is about so much more than just horseracing.

From haute couture, to form and flamboyance, the thoroughbred royalty convene for a R4,25 million purse. With 55 000 people at the heart of the excitement and millions more taking serious bets or indulging in a little flutter, this annual spectacle is one of the supreme attractions on the South African social calendar, and is not to be missed!
