GLADYS & ROY MEAKER

Two of the most popular and loyal members of racing in South Africa with an involvement in the sport spanning nearly 40 years are Gladys and Roy Meaker who, since 1973, have owned about 1 000 horses and are just as passionate about racing today as they were at the beginning.

“We really love the sport and the nice people involved,” said Roy who with Gladys still has about 10 horses in training and is involved in breeding in the Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

“My wife and Sonny Whiteford’s daughter were great friends and through their relationship we met Sonny who talked me into getting my first horse. Over the years I have had more than 500 winners and have owned some wonderful horses like Gigantic, Bahadur and Secret Rites.

“The highlight was winning the J&B Met with Bahadur and Secret Rites won the then Clairwood Winter Handicap.”

Roy and Gladys had two winners in September with Wittenberg and Ice Diamond which earned them the owner of the month award.
