KEITH YOUNG

A great lover of horses, Keith Young has owned racehorses for about 40 years and, together with wife Pauline, are heavily involved in the sport as owners and breeders with Keith racing the colts and geldings in his colours while Pauline’s colours grace the fillies.

He recounted how his first winner was a battler named Valley View, trained by Alistair Gordon and ridden by Michael Roberts, and had only just “fallen across the line”.

“In those days you couldn’t touch the jockey and everyone was aghast when I shook Michael’s hand. All Michael said in response, was ‘now you can sell it’.”

Racing just a small number of runners with trainer Craig Eudey each year and bringing in youngsters that they had bred, Keith said the important thing to remember was that “you can’t make a living out of racing.” It was the love of the horse and the sport of racing that had to be the driving factor.

“As a family we love horses and racing but it is really nice to have a winner. I had not had a winner for two years and then last month I had two winners in one week and a further two places. I told Craig it would be nice to have two winners every week.”
