Owner of the Month

LARRY NESTAD

Involved in racing for more than 20 years as an owner and breeder in South Africa, Australia and the United States, Larry was “talked” into becoming an owner by a friend and had a winner with his first horse Tawny Sky in its first race on his very first visit to the racetrack in 1984 which was a unique event.

However, he only really became involved in the industry in the late ‘80s and since then has owned many Grade 1 winners including North By Northwest, Palace Line, Young Rake, Suntagonal, Russian Sage, Pointing North and, most recently, Irish Flame.

During the month Irish Flame won the Daily News 2000 and Perana won while Straight Forward was placed in the two races he contested.

“I only race in partnerships with good friends and that is the most enjoyable way. Having success together with others is wonderful.

“I have had a lot of success in racing and enjoy putting something back. I was a steward of the Vaal Turf Club and have been on the board of the SA Horseracing Authority for seven years and as chairman for the last three.”

His success with Irish Flame and Perana has earned him the owner of the month award for June.
