PETER DE MARIGN

The son of the late Pierre De Marigny, a steward of the Durban Turf Club in the 1970’s, Peter was drawn into the sport of kings at an early age and became an owner in 1984 - striking it lucky with the first horse he was involved in, Mad Max, winning “six or seven races.”

He withdrew from active participation in racing for about five years while his children were growing up but came back to the sport in 1999 and now has small shares in eight horses.

“it’s a hobby and I’m just having fun – I love it. I don’t have big shares but I am in with a lot of mates and we are having fun.”

A close friend of owner-breeder Steve Sturlese, Peter has taken over the management of Steve’s horses and with an intricate mating programme obtained from Australia, handles the matings for Steve’s mares.

Peter said the first horse he bred from the system is Countless Times who won the Gr3 Umkhomazi Stakes at Scottsville on April 27. He also had another winner with Norse Sky during the month.
